Ireland is our adopted home, and as many expats in front of us, we have come to love its history interwoven with the pure beauty of the land as much if not more, than those who had the good fortune to be born here. We reinvented our lives for more than five years ago now, and we still enjoyed the short journey of Kinsale which we love to visit other historical views of Ireland. High on our list of places to go in Ireland is rock Cashel. This article is one of a series of "must see places in Ireland" and is written for those who are staying in our short term Let in Kinsale, or other consideration to accommodation in Kinsale or places to stay in Kinsale.
About an hour north of Cork by the motorway (along the M8 to Dublin) is rock Cashel in top ten for stunning photo opportunities as the ruins of the medieval monastery sits high on a hill overlooking a long Valley and the small town of Cashel is nestled at the base. Its ability to ignore the whole of the surrounding landscape is evidence of the desire for safety in its original Builder, site, so that they will not only be closer to God, but also to see all the hostile forces far beyond.
The photographer will want to capture three types of shots: look at the rock and the ruins from a distance on the Plains, look at other monastic ruins from the top, and of course ruins, many exquisite views.
After paying the fee as a small introduction (and if you will be in Ireland-we recommend that you buy a historic passport) you will be treated to some place of relics from the website, preserved from the elements to be indoors. These include an excellent example of a Celtic Cross as a female figure that some consider a Susanne na gig. Walking distance to your right as you enter the exit indicating you another small building for a short documentary on the site and its history.
We disagree on the female form inside the area visitors a Susanne na gig, but for those with keen eyes there on one of the buildings on the Rock Cashel page. For those who are unfamiliar with these mystical erotic female figures, they were often carved into the sides of buildings (mostly churches), and is believed to have been recognized as a ward against evil, although of course no one will ever know for certain if this is true. Hundreds in Ireland and the United Kingdom, although many others were affected by its buildings as they were seen as blasphemous.
To find Susanne on Rock Cashel turn right out of the visitors view area and continue past all the buildings to the last building on the right. You will overlook the hiking trail that brought you to the entrance. Look at all the stones in the far corner of the building from where you stand far and you will find a carved female form in a row above the header. She is a lateral building instead of standing which often is the case.
If your visit to the Rock Cashel is an easy day trip from Kinsale, or stop by on the way from Kinsale to Dublin, we recommend it for both the visitor and Irish person. Slainte "
